About Brooklyn |
Brooklyn Sherman arrived in Portland as a baby on Mother’s Day weekend in 2002. Instead of passing him off to a babysitter, his mother, Dr. Tanya March, a noted community activist and historian, brought him to HOPE VI, Neighborhood Association, and Landmark Commission meetings as a young child. Growing up, Brooklyn and his family spent their free time volunteering together at PTA & school events, the St. Johns Food Share, and SOLVE cleanups. It was through this unique family bonding experience that Brooklyn learned to love Portland and community service.
When he’s not working or helping to run his mom’s small business, it’s common to find Brooklyn testifying at City Commission or School Board meetings, protesting and rallying for education from PPS headquarters to the State Capitol, helping out with the Vanport Placemarking Project and other community initiatives, or cheering for his brother at a Roosevelt Roughriders football game. |
In 2021, while the status quo were debating amongst themselves on who should run for Portland’s open school board spot, Brooklyn ignored the drama and stepped up to run. While social distancing and donning masks amidst the COVID pandemic, Brooklyn was still active in the community, talking to voters about education, youth rights, and other important issues.
Brooklyn is a product of Portland’s public schools. He attended Metropolitan Learning Center from Kindergarten through 8th grade and graduated from Jefferson High School. He then attended Portland State University where he received his B.A. in Business Management. He works as a union bus driver for Portland Public Schools and as a part-time advertising manager and tour guide for his mother’s walking tour company, where he helped manage to keep it open through the COVID pandemic. Brooklyn represents Slabtown Tours on the St. Johns Boosters Business Association and has held various jobs in the community from detailing cars to being a hospital security guard. |
